Why use a WSO?

Whenever contractors are required to carry out works on an active airport, a Work Safety Officer (WSO) is always required in order to monitor the work, in accordance with CASA MOS 139 standards.

Larger-scale airport works are typically undertaken every 3-5 years, especially in the regional sector. So it’s often the case that airport staff have no previous experience dealing with works and projects on such a scale.

The addition of workers and equipment, as a result of these projects, can be more than the existing airport staff can manage in conjunction with their regular duties.

It’s in these situations where a Work Safety Officer (WSO) is sourced by the airport operators.

why

Work carried out on an airport’s airside causes changes to regular operation, as certain sections of the airport (including movement areas) require temporary closure. These areas are then unavailable for aircraft use.

As an aviation safety expert, a WSO ensures the safety of aircraft and services at an airport, while also ensuring that airport works don’t compromise the airport’s operational safety.
